Did you ever get in trouble for doing something that turned out to be your calling?
I always got in trouble for talking. Well, now I get to talk all I want, bitches!
Ha!
When I don’t express myself on something important, I get a sore throat. No joke. It’s not that I need to spew every thought I’m having. But, if it’s vital to my well-being or someone else’s, I speak up.
Hence, advocating for the childfree community.
Mid-2019, I partnered with two other childfree women, and together we created Childfree Girls. The show began as a series on YouTube (way beyond my comfort zone btw). We added a podcast version in March of this year (2020). Conversations with my co-hosts and other guests bring clarity to my childfree choice. Even when the guest is not childfree.
When the show was pitched to me, I balked at the thought of being on video. But, the childfree conversation took precedence. Pride aside, I agreed to co-host the show.
So glad I did!
To Baby or Not to Baby
….is an entertaining podcast that features conversations with people of all statuses.
“Baby!”
“Maybe…”
or
“Fuck that, I ain’t havin’ no kids!”.
I made a guest appearance on the podcast this week. Naomi, the host, is a new mom who was on the fence about having kids. The conversation we had focused on my choice not to pursue motherhood. I taught her what childfree bingos meant. She then told me the question she had planned to ask me next but didn't want to bingo me. I told her to ask me anyway. It was a great question. We'll see if it makes the final edit. I have no say over that. The episode airs in January, so I'll post the link and that question if it doesn't make it into the episode.
Accidental Parenthood
My brother was a teen dad. He's now 34 and the primary caregiver to his two boys. It's been an emotional journey to hell and back. And now, he and I are turning that journey into a podcast. It's his story, not about parenting but about the effects that being a parent can have on one's mental health.
I ask him all sorts of questions. Some I know the answer to. Some are a surprise.
He's been a parent for 15 years, and it's a different conversation compared to someone who is a new parent, that’s for sure!
I'm currently editing the first 10 episodes.
Childfree Pick-of-the-Week
I want children the world over to know that being childfree is a valid option.
Is that selfish of me?
*wink*
This means building alliances with parents. Be they our close friends and family or professional acquaintances. Episode 32 of Childfree Girls is a conversation asking:
Why are parents and childfree people pitting against each other?
The episode is also available in podcast form on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and all other podcast apps.
Final Thoughts
I started the week by celebrating my 38th birthday. I went to the nail salon for some fancy nails and a rhinestone pedicure. The next day, the government announced a 4-week enhanced lockdown of the city. Extra sparkle to get through this pandemic, I tell you. I now wear rhinestone-encrusted face masks.
I wish you a good week and great conversations!
Until next time,
